Biggie, our beautiful rescue yesterday, has been through a comprehensive vet check and X-rays under sedation. She suffered severe injuries, including multiple pelvic fractures about two months ago, most of which healed misaligned. Her femoral head is shattered across the growth plate and won’t heal, and there’s been significant muscle wasting since it was too painful for her to use the leg. The difference in muscle mass between the two legs is clear, and the fracture is obvious on the X-ray, even to non-medical eyes. After a long and heated discussion, with everyone wanting the best for her, we decided to go ahead with a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) as the least invasive option that might give her a pain-free life. She’ll need intensive rehab for the muscle loss, as the muscle will support the bone in that area. Surgery is booked for January 6th at Vets for Pets, with costs expected to exceed $3,000, which we’re struggling to cover, while caring for the other dogs. It’s been a tough day, and we’re bracing for what’s ahead… 😦
