Outbreak Update – Day 6

Parvo room: No more deaths since 13th of Jan. No new admissions. 4 babies in parvo room with symptoms (one transferred to quarantine).

  • 7 weeks girl, day 4, stable. Wanted to eat a small piece of chicken, barky and alert. Still has loose stool (no blood).
  • 7 weeks boy, day 4, stable, loose stool stopped, well hydrated. Declined in the first 24h then stabilized.
  • 5 week girl, unvaccinated, has been temporary transferred back to quarantine (isolated individually) . After 48h off food, watery stool and quite lethargic, she had a good solid dark stool, very energetic, is hungry like a wolf (ate roasted chicken and went for my fingers as well).
  • 5 weeks girl (48h) declined from yesterday but she is alert. She is on subcutaneous liquids and electrolytes by syringe every h. Bloody stool.
  • 7 weeks boy, vaccinated, is doing great and had some small pieces of chicken this morning. He is alert and full of mischief but waiting for stool sample to decide whether he will be transferred out. He has been in for 48h, off food, loose stool and lethargic.

Still not out of the woods, especially concerned about girl 3 and boy 4, but the virus’s aggressiveness seems to be fading (we had one death in 12 hours, one in 24 hours, and two in 48 hours during the first three days).

Both Puppy Runs have been depopulated, F10 decontaminated at surface level and will remain closed (wood, grass and tiles area)

Quarantine area (individual crates relocated on non contaminated ground): A 5 weeks boy in quarantine has loose stool but still eating well and alert. The other 6 puppies show no symptoms. All are crated individually in crates set 1m apart and monitored every 2h. Thanks to the donations received, all puppies have sterile crate covers, puppy pads, sterile bowls, and there’s a good stock of bleach for cleaning and medical gowns and gloves. The bowl and crates are disinfected with F10.

Run 2 – Biggie experienced a loss of appetite for a day, though her stool remained normal, and she ate well this morning. All adults and older puppies in R2 are vaccinated. There’s no indication the virus has reached this area, but the access area and kennels have been disinfected with F10 as a precaution.

JDC K9 – no symptoms. Last contact with puppies 6 days ago, all vaccinated, over 6 months old.

We are extremely grateful for the donation of medical and cleaning supplies, as well as funds to cover treatment and safety needs during this difficult time. A big thanks to Bay Vets (Vets for Pets) for their prompt, round-the-clock support. We informed MSD Merck about this unusual outbreak in two recently vaccinated, isolated litters, and they kindly offered to cover all the sample testing at Massey University to help identify the strain and source/origin. We truly appreciate the support and research that could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
