Outbreak Update – day 10

It’s day 10 since that black Friday when Yvonne started feeling low and off her food. It’s been a rough time, and that’s an understatement. It was made harder by a cross-contamination incident on main access areas, lack of support for adjusting infrastructure on premises – ie access to water in isolation, where water had to be carried in buckets from the main site – limited funds (no adoption fees during lockdown, our main way to keep the rescue running) and, above all, the heartbroken and exhausted small staff tirelessly providing round-the-clock care. To keep the community safe, we limited participation to volunteers without dogs at home, and their main contributions were in the non-contaminated areas (ie R2).

We’re deeply thankful to everyone who donated, helping us cover vet bills, get PPE, and buy F10 and Sterigene to stop the spread. Without your support, we could’ve had a lot of losses!

We’re also so thankful for all the support, encouragement, empathy, and care you’ve shown for these little bubs!

– There are no new cases now.

– One parvo pup is still off food but well hydrated, while the rest are eating eagerly and getting restless.

– Six pups haven’t been sick, even though they’re from the same litters and been vaccinated in the same time. They’ve been isolated since the 9th, and though incubation is usually shorter, we’re playing it safe and keeping them isolated for the full 14 days. They’ll be ready to move into a new run together on the 24th, which we still need to set up.

– All JDC K9 team are unaffected. Since the puppy run was set up in the JDC K9 team area, all recovering puppies that are still shedding won’t be able to return there as a precaution to protect the JDC team.

– R2 remains unaffected. We’re maintaining strict sanitization protocols and limiting visitor access to the run, with adoptions happening at the front gate from 24th of Jan.
