We’re happy to announce that JDC Rescue is out of Parvovirus lockdown!
The lockdown was put in place after a Parvo outbreak emerged in early January from a new litter of five puppies, seven weeks old, who were vaccinated upon arrival. These puppies were kept separate from a younger litter of five five-week-old puppies but were allowed to interact with other vaccinated puppies. They were also kept apart from adult dogs, volunteers, and visitors.
In a chain of events still under investigation, the most severe cases appeared suddenly with neurological symptoms, affecting the Three Little Ladies, who were double vaccinated and due for their third shot in a week. All of them, along with little Barry from the 7-week-old litter, passed away within hours. Yvonne was identified as Patient Zero.
JDC quickly put a lockdown in place, enforced individual isolation, and carried out thorough disinfection with Sterigene and F10. Run 2, which includes vaccinated adults and older puppies, stayed unaffected. The nine remaining puppies from R1 are either recovering well or were never impacted, and the JDC team also remained unaffected.
We’re deeply relieved that no additional deaths occurred after the first 72 hours, and we’re overjoyed to share that all nine puppies are now safe. This journey has been incredibly challenging, requiring tireless dedication and round-the-clock care. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the generous donations of goods and funds we received during the closure of the Rescue. Your support made it possible for us to carry out essential disinfection and provide care for both our sick and healthy residents on site. With our only source of income being adoption fees—minimally priced to cover crucial needs like microchips, vaccinations, and food—the lockdown has profoundly impacted our ability to fund our work.
