JDC Rescue’s Position on Spaying and Neutering Dogs

We’d like to reiterate JDC Rescue’s non-negotiable position: we strongly recommend desexing MATURE dogs WITHOUT health problems that could be aggravated by the procedure, or genetic conditions that might be affected by it (which can be determined through a DNA test). We consider the health of the dog is of outmost importance and we fully support mandatory desexing WITHIN these parameters.

Desexing is a major surgery that permanently affects a dog’s bone development and endocrine system, so it’s not something to take lightly. We understand the overpopulation problem all too well—it’s something we face every day—but we’re not willing to compromise the healthy development of dogs by desexing them as puppies. We believe the practice of desexing at 8 weeks old or younger is completely irresponsible.

“Principles guiding veterinary practice, particularly the Hippocratic oath emphasize a veterinarian’s duty to prioritize the welfare of the individual animal their care, avoiding any actions that could knowingly harm or pose a danger, irrespective of broader societal implications.” – https://www.vss.net.au/desexing-your-dog.html
