JDC Rescue Statement of Position: Canine Euthanasia

We want to be clear about our stance on the elephant in the room: euthanasia.

We don’t support euthanasia for conditions that can be treated or in cases where surgery or palliative care can address pain and maintain a good quality of life.

We don’t support behavior-based euthanasia for “rushing,” minor incidents like barking, or as a matter of convenience to address common issues. We are firmly against breed-based euthanasia, or “lack of space” based euthanasia.

We support humane, health-based euthanasia as a last resort when no other options are available. This includes terminal illness with no palliative care and pain relief options (such as specific late-stage cancers) or injuries incompatible with life. A decision of this nature would warrant consulting several independent veterinarian professionals for confirmation that no treatment exists and there is no option to provide pain relief and ensure life quality. We have all the compassion for everyone making this excruciating call in similar circumstances.
