MSD Merck NZ took biological samples from the litters vaccinated with batch 2505003 of the Nobivac Flex DHPPi parvovirus vaccine for testing at Massey labs, then “disposed of” the samples, followed by complete silence.

We contacted Merck MSD – NZ branch after the parvo outbreak in a litter of double vaccinated puppies on schedule and a second litter of puppies who had Nobivac live vaccine a week earlier. Theoretically, both litters should’ve been protected: “the onset of immunity is one week after vaccination”.
Merck agreed to test biological samples at Massey University lab so we can figure out the origin of the specific virus in the outbreak.
We provided 2 biological samples via Bay Vets. After 3 weeks in which we didn’t hear anything back, we called Merck to find out the result. The conversation with their representative was, to say the least, strange.
First, we have been informed that “because of a labelling problem” the samples have been disposed of. And we haven’t been informed for 3 weeks.
Secondly, we offered to provide fresh samples – the puppies who recovered are still shedding. The response was a categoric NO, and the explanation was that “the puppies have been vaccinated so obviously if we retest it will show the vaccine”.
The puppies have been vaccinate before, not after outbreak, so why “it will show the vaccine” now for the second set of samples, and not for the first samples (that were “dispposed of”)?
Upon being asked to elaborate, the representative invoked “confidentiality clauses” saying that “they can’t provide further information”.
We’re hopeful that Merck also has a record of this call, because this conversation took a very sinister turn, in particular the silence, the refusal to retest and the “confidentiality clauses” and needs to be escalated.
The samples have already been destroyed, but we still need answers.We won’t stop until we find out what actually happened to Odette, Yvonne, Athena and Barry – ALL VACCINATED.
