This was an utter tragedy, the family lost everything—their home, their possessions, and the sense of security that once enveloped their lives—but thanks to Hazel, the brave companion who risked everything to protect them, her owner is alive and well! Hazel’s quick thinking and loyalty in the face of danger not only saved her owner but also provided a glimmer of hope amidst the overwhelming sorrow. As the smoke cleared and the reality of their loss set in, the family found comfort in the fact that they still had each other and their beloved dog, who stood as a testament to their resilience and the importance of love in overcoming adversity.
We previously posted few corrections – which are irrelevant to the brave Hazel’s actions, but still worth noticing. Hazel was never in Whakatane pound, which adds to the growing confusion surrounding her story. At the time we tried to check on Hazel’s whereabouts, the Whakatane pound response was obtuse as always: “we only keep the roaming dogs for seven days,” a statement that reflects their lack of awareness and appreciation for individual stories. This dog is a national hero after saving her very new owner’s life, demonstrating incredible courage and loyalty, yet this pound remains notoriously tone deaf, failing to recognize the immense impact she has made. The need for better communication and understanding from such organizations is clear, particularly when dealing with animals that have touched the lives of so many people. Hazel’s tale is not just about her past but also serves as a call to action for all animal welfare organizations to do better in recognizing the heroes among us, regardless of their circumstances.
