8 little heartbeats need help!

Another difficult post… A very nice lady who rescued the mom and has done everything humanly possible to save the puppies and the mom. Including giving them mange medication, deworming and quality food. She asked SPCA for support. SPCA advised her to take them all to the pound. We vaccinated the eight little bubs and the mom now, microchipped, each puppy had a comprehensive vet check and will continue the treatment in the following weeks. It’s expensive, it’s heartbreaking, but they will be fine: even if the agency supposed to look after “sick and injured” slammed the door shut again.…

Noire

Let us introduce puppy Noire (“black” in French), a sweetheart rescue born early December. Noire is a sighthound x lab, and she was one of the puppies who went through a major parvo outbreak early January and kicked parvo to the curb. We believe her litter was contaminated and incubating before being vaccinated and brought on site. Noire is the sweetest puppy possible, loves people, loves affection and she is very food motivated, true to the lab nature. She has a great attention span, and she is a gentle and intelligent girl, extensively socialized with puppies from different litters and…

Parvovirus Aftermath – Support

In just the past five months, JDC has rehomed over 90 dogs, including urgent cases, and recently saved nine wonderful, vaccinated puppies with parvovirus from certain death. We live by our principle that Every Dog Matters, but the journey hasn’t been easy. Without proper infrastructure support at our current leased site, half the grounds are now cordoned off indefinitely. Parvovirus can survive in soil for up to seven years or more, even after thorough decontamination, posing a risk to new dogs. We know rescuing those nine lives was the right choice, and we’re committed to continue fighting for every life…

JDC Rescue Statement on recent incidents involving our volunteers

We’ve recently heard from our volunteers that former JDC director Paul Michael Norris and his associates are targeting JDC staff, volunteers, visitors, and their families, creating a harassment issue we need to address. As confirmed in December 2025, Paul Norris is no longer representing or associated with JDC. He has been removed as a director and shareholder following several incidents, some involving dog neglect, losing a dog, breaching H&S policies and assault with injuries of a female staff on JDC Rescue premises. The remaining staff took upon themselves Paul Norris duties, and the lost dog has been found safe and…

Mystery Behind Disposed Parvo Samples: Merck’s Silence

MSD Merck NZ took biological samples from the litters vaccinated with batch 2505003 of the Nobivac Flex DHPPi parvovirus vaccine for testing at Massey labs, then “disposed of” the samples, followed by complete silence. ___________________________ We contacted Merck MSD – NZ branch after the parvo outbreak in a litter of double vaccinated puppies on schedule and a second litter of puppies who had Nobivac live vaccine a week earlier. Theoretically, both litters should’ve been protected: “the onset of immunity is one week after vaccination”. Merck agreed to test biological samples at Massey University lab so we can figure out the…

JDC Rescue Statement of Position: Canine Euthanasia

We want to be clear about our stance on the elephant in the room: euthanasia. We don’t support euthanasia for conditions that can be treated or in cases where surgery or palliative care can address pain and maintain a good quality of life. We don’t support behavior-based euthanasia for “rushing,” minor incidents like barking, or as a matter of convenience to address common issues. We are firmly against breed-based euthanasia, or “lack of space” based euthanasia. We support humane, health-based euthanasia as a last resort when no other options are available. This includes terminal illness with no palliative care and…

SPCA Concerns: “Too Reluctant To Euthanize”

Today, JDC Rescue had an unplanned visit from two SPCA inspectors from the Whakatane branch. The visit was prompted by concerns that “JDC Rescue may be too reluctant to euthanize.” When asked to elaborate, the SPCA representative explained that Bay Vets clinic had reported concerns about us not euthanizing, in particular the puppies with parvovirus (vaccinated per schedule, btw). JDC Rescue contacted Bay Vets, the clinic that stood by us wholeheartedly during the parvo outbreak, to clarify the “vet reported concerns.” We work hand in hand with our vets, and without their incredible support, we wouldn’t have nine healthy puppies…

JDC Rescue’s Position on Spaying and Neutering Dogs

We’d like to reiterate JDC Rescue’s non-negotiable position: we strongly recommend desexing MATURE dogs WITHOUT health problems that could be aggravated by the procedure, or genetic conditions that might be affected by it (which can be determined through a DNA test). We consider the health of the dog is of outmost importance and we fully support mandatory desexing WITHIN these parameters. Desexing is a major surgery that permanently affects a dog’s bone development and endocrine system, so it’s not something to take lightly. We understand the overpopulation problem all too well—it’s something we face every day—but we’re not willing to…

The Fantastic Crew of Nine

The fantastic puppy crew of nine (who beat Parvo!) are enjoying their well deserved time out For those who missed the updates, we had an outbreak in two isolated, vaccinated litters. The origins are still investigated at Massey (we provided biological samples). We lost an entire litter of three within the first 48 hours— three three-month-old pups with two vaccines, the third due in two weeks—and a small eight-week-old pup with one vaccine. They tested positive for parvo despite showing minimal or no GI symptoms and received medical care. The vet suspects at least one case was the cardiac form,…

Also, Biggie is doing fantastic, using all four legs! As a dark chapter comes to a close, we can either tuck it away in a quiet corner of the heart or draw strength from it.…

Lockdown Lifted – We are Open for Adoptions

We’re happy to announce that JDC Rescue is out of Parvovirus lockdown! The lockdown was put in place after a Parvo outbreak emerged in early January from a new litter of five puppies, seven weeks old, who were vaccinated upon arrival. These puppies were kept separate from a younger litter of five five-week-old puppies but were allowed to interact with other vaccinated puppies. They were also kept apart from adult dogs, volunteers, and visitors. In a chain of events still under investigation, the most severe cases appeared suddenly with neurological symptoms, affecting the Three Little Ladies, who were double vaccinated…
