Outbreak Update – Day 6
Parvo room: No more deaths since 13th of Jan. No new admissions. 4 babies in parvo room with symptoms (one transferred to quarantine). Still not out of the woods, especially concerned about girl 3 and boy 4, but the virus’s aggressiveness seems to be fading (we had one death in 12 hours, one in 24 hours, and two in 48 hours during the first three days). Both Puppy Runs have been depopulated, F10 decontaminated at surface level and will remain closed (wood, grass and tiles area) Quarantine area (individual crates relocated on non contaminated ground): A 5 weeks boy in…
Keep readingOutbreak Update – Day 5
Update Day 5: We do everything humanly possible around the clock to ensure timely treatment and to contain, and hope that the vaccines will help at least some of them. Four healthy puppies have been moved to a makeshift shelter on uncontaminated ground, and any clean crates or crate covers would be a big help. We can’t disinfect and reuse the ones we have since we haven’t yet received the F10 or Stergene. Vetpost went above and beyond, arranging urgent separate deliveries after we explained the situation. We’re incredibly thankful for any help in covering vet visits, PPE, veterinary supplies,…
Keep readingImportant Update: Parvovirus Lockdown
Due to recent safety breach (cross-contamination resulting from a ride-on lawn mower operated in both contaminated and previously safe areas) we have a new case in a previously non contaminated area and all JDC Rescue premises are placed under total parvovirus lockdown. No dogs will be permitted entry or exit, and no visitors will be allowed until January 24th. All volunteers must have full personal protective equipment (PPE) upon entry and adhere to the specific emergency protocols prior to accessing any dog areas: parvo area, quarantine area, and non-contaminated adult residents’ area. Each dog is already housed in an individual…

Keep readingYvonne
We’re devastated—our sweet Yvonne passed away from Parvo yesterday, 09.01.26. She had been vaccinated and kept in isolation, never leaving the center, yet she was the first puppy to show symptoms, starting an outbreak that’s still going on. She started intracutaneous fluids drip and electrolytes immediately, but sadly, she passed just over 24 hours after the symptoms began. She was a beautiful, calm puppy born in November 2025. Rest in Peace, angel! ___________________________________________ December 2025: Yvonne is the biggest puppy of our very precious trio – “The Three Little Ladies” – that came to us from Bilbo’s dogpaws Rescue as…

Thank you so much to everyone who supported Biggie on her journey with donations, prayers or, simply, love and encouragement!!! Above all, words can’t say how grateful we are for the people who made Biggie’s surgery possible today: it wasn’t optional. Biggie would’ve been euthanatized on 22th of December if we didn’t hold a small spark of hope that we can make this surgery possible, while feeding 20 other rescues: and WE DID! Below is the list of donations from these absolutely awesome souls who saved Biggie!!!! Acc: 38-9027-0283734-00 22-Dec-25 Temple Donation TEMPLE J MAYFIE ;Ref: Temple Donation TEMPLE J…

Keep readingMr Magic
Mr Magic – will have some proper photos shortly, but for now just a quick peak at this awesome guy! Magic is a pound rescue. He is a border collie x, medium size, possibly with a touch of Smithfield, who spent a long time wandering the coast on his own. He likely made some human friends along the way, as he’s well-fed and looking great. He’s estimated to be about 3 to 4 years old, very friendly with people, walks nicely on a leash, and loves car rides. He is content chilling all day under a tree. It’s clear he…

Thank you again, and here’s to a 2026 that will be the best year so far!

Keep readingSupport for Biggie
We have a detailed estimate for Biggie’s surgery, scheduled for January 6th at Whakatane Bay Vets (Vets for Pets).Check out our page to read Biggie’s story: two months ago, as a young puppy, she suffered catastrophic injuries at someone’s hands and was dumped in the bush near Murupara to die. Somehow, she survived so far… disabled, in horrendous pain, and severely emaciated. The surgery will only go ahead with a 50% deposit paid on the morning of the procedure, with the remaining balance due at discharge. Biggie is in severe, unmanageable pain, and the vet’s assessment is that the only…
Keep readingAbout Biggie and Nobody’s Dogs
I’ve wondered if I should write this while feeling so sad. Still unsure if these emotions belong on paper. There’s little point in delving into the shadows of rescue work—especially so near to Christmas. Our dogs aren’t victims, they’re survivors. Yet, for many, the battle is too hard. Sometimes it feels too hard for us as well. If we struggle to cope, what chance does a defenseless dog have against all odds? The emergency dogs, the ones born or dumped in the middle of nowhere —if not shot or drowned—are nobody’s dogs. No one cares. They are every bit as…
Keep readingUpdate on Biggie
Biggie, our beautiful rescue yesterday, has been through a comprehensive vet check and X-rays under sedation. She suffered severe injuries, including multiple pelvic fractures about two months ago, most of which healed misaligned. Her femoral head is shattered across the growth plate and won’t heal, and there’s been significant muscle wasting since it was too painful for her to use the leg. The difference in muscle mass between the two legs is clear, and the fracture is obvious on the X-ray, even to non-medical eyes. After a long and heated discussion, with everyone wanting the best for her, we decided…
Keep readingCooper has two fantastic humans!
We’re very happy to announce that our smart, funny and sweet Cooper has found himself an amazing young family and with no doubt they will have a lot of fun together for many years to come!!! Keep readingShadow and Biggie
Today, on the way to Whakatane from Murupara area, three remarkable young people made a lifesaving difference by rescuing two dogs dumped in the bush – one of the dogs being injured. It looks like the poor pups have been fending for themselves for quite some time. Biggie, tan brindle, is in dire need of care with her severely emaciated state and a probable leg/hip dislocation, compounded by weakness in his other hind leg. Shadow (blue pup), a mere 6-month-old blue puppy, has scars around her neck hinting at a past marked by confinement: chained dog. Despite their hardships, both…

Update: Grayson is in adoption process 🙂 Thank you so much for your support sharing this sweet boy’s story, we will post updates soon! ________________________________________________ Grayson is a sweet 5-year-old true gem, Staffy x, born on April 28, 2020. Kind-natured and highly intelligent, he attended daycare daily, quickly becoming one of the staff’s favorites. He’s deeply loved by his owner, who is very reluctantly rehoming him due to a genuine family emergency. Grayson needs a new home AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (and we can’t emphasize that enough!) due to current circumstances, and he will need to be a very cherished…
Keep readingSilver
Meet sweet SILVER, a beautiful and gentle silver and golden colored pound rescue boy, under one year old. Silver’s past is a mystery—he was abandoned in a remote area, which is heartbreaking considering what a gem of a dog he is. He’s considerate, well-mannered, gentle, with a medium energy level and a gorgeous coat. He loves people, gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and longs for connection and affection. There’s a touch of sadness in his eyes, visible in photos, a sadness that will only fade in the care of a deeply loving home and his special person. We think…

Happy to introduce this absolutely stunning boy with a very joyful disposition and a luxurious shiny long coat – plus his glorious fluffy tail!!!! HAPPY is a pound rescue (he thinks he is on a great adventure!) loves everyone here, dogs included, and he is a sight to behold. He already stole more kisses than we, as trainers, dare to admit! Happy is well mannered, very intelligent, and we can see the Lassie (Rough Collie) in him! We were curious about this stunner’s story, so we did some digging on social media and discovered that he went for a leisurely…
