Honey – hope and heartbreak

We took few days to be able to write about Honey here… and it will probably be hard to read.

Honey was rescued from a rural road where she was dropped like garbage with mange, heavy flea infestation, her skin was all a big wound, and she was in shutdown. She was thrown away to die. She had several dog bite marks and her spirit was barely hanging there. Honey has been used for intensive breeding, her body is very swollen and we are still to find out at the ultrasound today what we deal with. She may be still pregnant with a new litter, albeit no sign of life and movement…

There’s been 2 days on a rollercoaster with emergency vet, mange medication, medicated baths, creams, solutions, antiinflamatories, antiseptic, prednisone, deflea and deworming, trying to bring this baby relief and help her start healing. But that’s just as much as we can do: help the body heal. We don’t know what she has been through and we could only hope that she will leave the trauma behind. Honey didn’t even look at us, when we picked her up and put her in the car. Here is how we met Honey: she was stiff. Terrified. And unresponsive to human touch.

There’s been 2 days filled with hope and heartbreak. And then there’s been that quiet miracle, when Honey turned to me, gently placed her paw in my hand, and looked straight into my heart with her soulful eyes. It was a silent moment of understanding that transcends the need for words. She forgives. She trusts. She knows we are trying to help, and she is ready to heal.

That fleeting moment, that look, one look, is everything that makes this work worthwhile – all effort, all sleepless nights, all tears. All of it.
